Japanese Ojime Rabbit adapted from a 19th century original in The Newark Museum, New Jersey. The Japanese take great pride in even the smallest details of the accoutrements of living. Their swordguards (menuki), seal and personal object containers (inro), fastening beads (ojime) and sash toggles (netsuke) are already familiar to many, as examples of the pleasure taken in craftsmanship and artistry in miniature. Ojime such as this, were used to fasten and tighten the cord holding inro cases or pouches for personal items, medicines or tobacco to the obi sash worn around the waist in traditional Japanese male attire. This tiny, amusing rabbit shows both the craftsmanship of the 19th century Japanese goldsmith, and a lively affectionate imagination in his handling of the subject.Sterling Silver Pendant (approx 1/2" Diameter) with 18 inch chain
